Dundee United secured a vital point with a 2-2 draw against Rangers at Dens Park on Saturday. The result preserves their fourth-place standing in the Scottish Premiership, a position they now hold with 14 points from nine matches, having recorded four wins, two draws and three losses this season.

Bradley Fink opened the scoring for the home side in the 37th minute, finishing a move that rewarded a period of United pressure. Rangers responded quickly, with Badredine Bouanani equalising just five minutes later. The visitors then took the lead on the hour mark through Nico Raskin, who was assisted by Dan Neil. Dundee United's resilience was rewarded in the 69th minute when Callum Jones capitalised on an error from Neil, who gave the ball away under pressure, to slot home the decisive equaliser.

Team performance

Steven Pressley's side set up in a 4-4-2 formation, with Owen Goodman making seven saves in goal and captain Ryan Astley marshalling the defence. Ashley Hay came close to giving United the lead earlier, striking the crossbar. The team registered 10 shots to Rangers' 21. Ethan Hamilton received a booking for the Terrors, while Rangers' Nicolas Raskin was also cautioned late on.

Alfie Harrison made his Dundee United debut, replacing Joe Bevan after 66 minutes. The point is a significant one in the context of their season, coming after a 1-1 draw with St Johnstone in midweek where Lyall Cameron scored a 79th-minute equaliser. Their recent form reads one win, two draws and one loss from the last four outings, following results against St Johnstone, Hibernian, St Mirren and Falkirk.

Derek McInnes, the Rangers manager, expressed his disappointment after the match. "Disappointing obviously, when you come from a goal behind," he said. "In the first half we never got Minsu Kim close enough to Ryan Naderi.

Dundee United manager Steven Pressley praised his team's character.

The draw means Dundee United stay ten points behind league leaders Celtic but crucially maintain their grip on a European qualification spot. This season, United have scored 13 goals and conceded 10. Their top scorer this campaign is J. Randall with two goals. They now turn their attention to an away fixture against St Mirren on Saturday 24 October. St Mirren currently sit eighth in the standings, making it another key match in United's pursuit of a top-four finish. Rangers, meanwhile, remain second in the table but have seen their gap to Celtic extended to five points.
