2-0 derby triumph lifts Dundee United
Dundee United secured a 2-0 victory over Dundee at Tannadice on Saturday, overturning the 2-0 defeat the clubs exchanged a year earlier. The win moved United to second place in the Scottish Premiership, a stark contrast to the position they occupied after the August loss.
Pressley’s redemption arc
The 52-year-old former defender, who took over Dundee in August, has faced criticism since his arrival. He endured a League Cup group exit after defeats by lower-league teams and a five-game winless start to the Premiership. The 2-0 loss to United in the fourth fixture of that run intensified pressure on him. A year later, the same scoreline now favours his side.
Pressley praised his players’ character, saying, “We didn’t carry out any part of [the game plan] to be honest, but what was very apparent in our performance was the grit and determination that your supporters are generally so proud of.” He added that “derby games are never won on tactical detail, they’re won on spirit and determination.”
Key performers and squad depth
Drey Wright, who joined from St Johnstone, scored the opener. Owen Bevan, on loan at Hibernian in 2024 but unable to feature, netted the second goal. The centre-back partnership of Ryan Astley and the newly signed Alan Forrest was solid, while forwards Charlie Reilly and Joe Bevan, former Albion Rovers players, added depth.
Arbroath midfielder Ryan Flynn, who had worked with Pressley at Falkirk, highlighted the coach’s ability to instil confidence. “He’s a master at instilling confidence in players and nurturing a positive environment for them to excel,” Flynn said.
Momentum and future ambitions
United have won five of their last seven Premiership matches, building on a run of three victories in the final four games of last season that saw them escape the bottom of the table. Pressley remains measured about expectations but is determined to improve on last season’s eighth-placed finish.
“It was no tactical detail that won us the game today, it was a group of players that were determined not to lose that derby,” Pressley said. “I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
