Dundee United have moved to bolster their squad by signing Alfie Harrison on a short-term contract. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder, who impressed on trial, has agreed a deal until January with an option for an extension.

Steven Pressley, the head coach, confirmed the move was a direct response to a severe injury list. "Head coach Pressley expects to be without eight first-team regulars for Saturday’s trip to Falkirk," he said. The club had considered their transfer business complete but were forced back into the market.

Injury crisis prompts move

The signing comes as United face a growing injury crisis. Striker Simon Murray is out for the season with an ACL injury, while Bobby Wales and Joe Westley are sidelined with ankle problems. Charlie Reilly and Ryan Finnigan are also not fit, and Zan Basir is suspended. This leaves Pressley with limited attacking options as his side, currently fourth in the Premiership on 10 points, prepare for a key fixture.

Harrison could make his debut in that match away to 11th-placed Falkirk on 10 October. The sides last met in a 1-1 draw at Tannadice in September. United's recent form has been inconsistent, with one win, one draw, and one loss in their last three league matches, scoring an average of 1.7 goals per game in that period but conceding an average of 1.3. Their next fixture, against Falkirk, is a key test as they aim to stay in touch with the league leaders.

Player background and trial

Harrison, a former youth player with Blackburn, Manchester City and Newcastle United, became a free agent in June. He never made a senior appearance for Newcastle but was a regular for their under-21 side. He joined United on trial several weeks ago, playing in a closed-door game against Hearts and continuing to train with the squad.

Pressley praised the youngster's potential. He described Harrison as a young player with great potential who can add competition to the squad and said the club is delighted to welcome him on board. The player himself expressed a desire to impress and earn a longer stay at Dens Park. His immediate focus is on providing cover in a squad that has scored nine goals in seven league games this season. Alfie Harrison's first opportunity to feature for Dundee United arrives this weekend.
