Dundee United have added Hall of Fame favourite Andy McLaren to their squad for next month's SPFL Tennent's Sixes tournament. The former winger joins a growing list of club legends set to represent United at the Braehead Arena event in October.
McLaren's place in United folklore is secure after his role in the club's historic Scottish Cup triumph. He scored in the quarter-final win over Airdrie and produced impressive displays in the semi-final against Aberdeen before featuring in the final victory over Rangers. That success marked the first time Dundee United had lifted the famous trophy.
A key figure in two eras
The homegrown talent was also instrumental in the club's return to the top flight. He set up both goals in the decisive second leg of the promotion play-off victory over Partick Thistle. McLaren remained a key figure as United secured a third-place finish and a return to European competition the following season.
After a spell with Reading, he returned to Tannadice. Across his two spells with the club, he made many appearances and scored goals. His contribution was formally recognised with induction into the Dundee United Hall of Fame. He also earned a senior Scotland cap against Poland.
Tournament details confirmed
The club confirmed McLaren will be joined in the Sixes squad by fellow former players Prince Buaben, Craig Easton, Morgaro Gomis and Paul Dixon, with further names to be announced. The iconic six-a-side competition, which captured the imagination of Scottish football fans in past decades, returns with all Premiership clubs taking part in a legends format.
Dundee United have been drawn in Group B alongside Aberdeen, St Johnstone and city rivals Dundee. The tournament begins with three regionalised groups of four on the Saturday, with each group winner and runner-up progressing to the knockout stages alongside the two best third-placed teams.
Current context for the club
The news offers a nostalgic diversion as the current Dundee United side prepare for their next challenge. Their most recent outing was a draw with Falkirk, with Mark Forbes scoring a late equaliser. Fans can track the modern squad's progress via the club's squad and standings pages. The first team's next fixture is away to Rangers.
