Dundee United have confirmed two former midfielders for their squad in the upcoming Tennent's Sixes tournament. Prince Buaben and Craig Easton will represent the club at the SPFL-backed event at Braehead Arena on 3 and 4 October.
The club announced the duo's inclusion, bringing significant experience to a competition that features all 12 Scottish Premiership sides. Dundee United have been drawn in Group B alongside Aberdeen, St Johnstone and local rivals Dundee, whom they lost 2-0 to in the Premiership just last month.
Tournament format and rules
The tournament format sees three regional groups of four, with group winners, runners-up and the two best third-placed teams progressing to the knockout stages. Each match must produce a winner, with a bonus point awarded for a penalty shootout victory if the scores are level after normal time. The competition will also see the return of a sin-bin system.
Prince Buaben made 142 appearances and scored 11 goals for United between 2007 and 2011. The Ghanaian midfielder, who joined after a trial under manager Craig Levein, played the full 90 minutes in the club's 3-0 Scottish Cup final win over Ross County in May 2010. After leaving Tannadice, he played for Watford, Hearts and several other clubs.
Craig Easton is another familiar face, having come through the youth system to make 259 appearances and score 17 goals between 1996 and 2004. The Bellshill-born midfielder's most productive season was 2000/01, when he netted six times in 39 games, and he also represented Scotland at Under-21 level during his time with United.
Current context for United
The tournament provides a different focus as the first team handles the Premiership season. Their next league fixture is a tough away trip to second-placed Rangers on 30 December, part of a challenging run of games detailed on our fixtures schedule.
Tickets and full information for the Tennent's Sixes are available on the official SPFL tournament website. The event marks the return of a popular competition that was a staple of the Scottish football calendar in the 1980s and 1990s.
