Dundee United's squad depth has been tested by two fresh injuries sustained in a midweek bounce game. Defender Joe Wright suffered a hamstring tear and forward Charlie Reilly fractured his toe during the closed-door match against Falkirk on Thursday.
Head coach Steven Pressley confirmed the setbacks, which compound an already significant injury crisis at Tannadice. Wright is expected to be absent for a number of weeks, while Reilly's recovery from his broken toe is projected to take up to three weeks.
Pressley's injury update
The new issues arrive as the club deals with several long-term absences. Captain Simon Murray and midfielder Fin Robertson are both out for the season with ACL injuries. Striker Joe Westley is recovering from a broken cheekbone, and Ash Hay remains sidelined. Midfielder Ryan Finnigan, a summer signing from Blackpool, is also nursing an ankle injury picked up in the recent defeat to Hearts.
Pressley told reporters the manager did offer a sliver of positive news, confirming that Ethan Hamilton, who missed training last week, should be available for the weekend's clash with Motherwell.
Finnigan's arrival and impact
Despite his current injury, Pressley was effusive in his praise for Finnigan, whose signing was the result of extensive work by the club's recruitment team. The manager had tracked the midfielder since seeing him play for Walsall alongside his son, Aaron, and tried to sign him in January.
Pressley said.
Squad context and next steps
The injuries come as Dundee United sit sixth in the Scottish Premiership with seven points from six matches. Their recent form shows three wins, one draw, and one loss from the last five outings. The team's next challenge is a trip to face second-placed Rangers on 30 December, a fixture that will test the depleted squad.
Fans can check the full list of unavailable players, including Mehdi Merghem and Miller Thomson, on the club's injuries page. The upcoming schedule, featuring the tough away day at Ibrox, is available on the fixtures list. With resources stretched, Pressley will need to rely on the remaining fit members of his squad to maintain their mid-table position in the coming weeks.
