Steven Pressley has highlighted the international recognition of two former Dundee United players as a major point of pride and a powerful recruitment tool for the club. Defender Luke Graham and goalkeeper Jon McCracken have both been named in Sebastien Pocognoli's first Scotland squad for the upcoming Nations League matches, a development the Tannadice boss believes enhances the club's reputation.

Pressley confirmed he sent personal messages of congratulations to both players. "We're really proud," the Dundee United head coach said. "With Luke Graham, there's been so many people within our club that have played a part in his progress, but most importantly, it's him. He's been prepared to put himself out there."

Graham, who came through the ranks at Dens Park, was sold to Stoke City for a club-record fee exceeding £2 million this summer after a breakout Premiership season under Pressley. His journey included loan spells at Lochee United, Albion Rovers, Montrose and Falkirk. "He just keeps facing the challenge ahead," Pressley said. "He found himself on the bench, I think, in the first couple of games at Stoke."

McCracken's Bradford form

Goalkeeper Jon McCracken, who left for Bradford City in the close season, has earned his recall with seven clean sheets in ten appearances. Pressley pointed to his outstanding form as another success story. "Jon has gone down to Bradford and performed brilliantly last time," he noted, adding that McCracken's previous involvement with Scotland during his time at Dundee would serve him well.

The head coach was candid about the challenge of replacing such talent. "We lost these two players, they're two of a number that we lost. We're talking international players now," Pressley acknowledged. "So that's the challenge for us all the time; is how do we replace international players?" He believes the proven pathway to the national team is a compelling argument for prospective signings. "The more stories we can tell, like a Jon McCracken, like a Luke Graham type story..."

Pressley also mentioned that current goalkeeper Owen Goodman is with the Canadian national team, with a potential first cap on the horizon, further strengthening the club's narrative.

Current context at Tannadice

The news comes as Dundee United sit fourth in the Premiership with 10 points from seven games. Their most recent result was a convincing 3-0 away win at St Mirren, with goals from Jesse Randall, Lyall Cameron and Kevin Ciubotaru.

Pressley reflected on Graham's previous experience training with the Scotland squad before the World Cup, suggesting it will ease his transition. "Luke being around the Scotland squad at the end of last season will help a lot," he said. "I think a big part of going into a national team, sometimes there's that imposter syndrome."

He concluded that seeing established stars as fellow professionals removes that barrier. The head coach's focus now turns to maintaining his team's form, with key players like top scorer Jesse Randall, who has two goals this season, central to their plans. The club will also be monitoring the fitness of sidelined duo Emmanuel Agyei and Miller Thomson ahead of the next match.
