Dundee United's progress under Jim Goodwin is being undermined by a glaring lack of goals from their strikers. The creative work of a formidable midfield trio is being wasted as the team's forwards struggle to find a cutting edge in the Premiership.

Zac Sapsford, Lachie Rose and Idjessi Metsoko have managed just two league goals between them this campaign. Sapsford and Rose have one each, while Metsoko is yet to open his account despite showing early promise. This deficiency persists even as the team sits fourth in the standings with 14 points from nine games.

Midfield creativity goes unrewarded

The engine room of Dylan Tait, Zidane Iqbal and Lyall Cameron has been generating chances, with Cameron scoring the equaliser in the recent 1-1 draw with St Johnstone. Their play has contributed to United scoring 13 goals this term, but the burden has not fallen on the recognised strikers. Top scorer Jesse Randall, a winger, has just two goals. Paul McNicoll of the Dode Fox Podcast pinpointed the problem. "The problem is what happens at the other end," he said.

Defensive improvement offers a platform

There is a positive foundation. The defence, bolstered by excellent new signing Michael Forbes and the redemption of Bert Esselink, has conceded only 10 goals, a clear improvement on last season. This solidity has allowed United to play a risk-and-reward style, capable of heavy wins like the 3-0 victory at St Mirren last month. Goodwin has praised the defensive unit for providing a platform from which the team can attack with confidence.

Yet without a reliable finisher, that attractive build-up risks disappointing supporters. The team's recent form of one win, one draw and two losses illustrates the inconsistency that stems from not converting dominance. They are now ten points behind leaders Celtic in the title race. The lack of a consistent goal threat from the central striking positions is seen as the primary obstacle to turning promising performances into more consistent results.

Goodwin's side must find a solution quickly with a home game against 11th-placed Kilmarnock coming up on 28 October. The match offers a chance to build momentum before a demanding run of fixtures. The manager has indicated he is exploring all options, including the potential for a tactical shift or giving further opportunities to other forwards in the squad, to address the issue.
